In the past, plus sized women used to be banned from walking in catwalk shows, but as of recent plus sized models have been storming the catwalks of New York Fashion Week and other large fashion events. According to Eatinddisorderhope.com (2016), it just so happens that people want to see models that more accurately reflect the body shape and size diversity found in the human population. That however, has not always been the case; having a plus sized model was mainly in a fashion show was seen as tokenism and not as a widespread acceptance of models across categories of various sizes, ages and races (Petter, 2017). Designers have famously shooed models away from castings for appearing too “bloated”.

Eventually, after a long period of time, this changed as fashion designers Chromat and then Christian Siriano arguably set the precedent for diversity adorning his runway with women of all shapes and sizes, including 12 plus-size girls (Petter, 2017). However, there are only two designers casting plus size models amidst a line-up of more than 60 shows and presentations. Even now, some designers not only put plus-size girls on the catwalk to boost public perceptions of a brand, but also to generate a flurry of press (Petter, 2017).

Though the plus-size movement is yet to be fully embraced by high fashion brands; the fashion industry is growing and including curvy women in major fashion shows and magazines and it has had such a positive impact on young women across the globe. There are a plethora of sizes that persons are slowly but surely starting to accept on the runway and in magazines.
